The GLOWS is a coalition of agencies, organizations and churches working to provide safe shelter during freezing weather. We open the shelter when the temperature is forecasted to be 32 degrees or less with a 20% chance of precipitation, or 25 degrees or less with no precipitation in the forecast. We watch the National Weather Forecast which does not always match the local forecast.
We provide cots, blankets, snacks, hot meals and friendly faces. We also provide kennels and food for the dogs that may come to the shelter with our friends.
We need volunteers to set up the gym before the event and take it down afterward. This means delivering cots, blankets and others supplies and taking them back to the warehouse afterward.
We need volunteers to check our guests in and be there to watch over them, keep them safe and handle any emergencies. Training will be scheduled periodically so you will be comfortable with your duties when called.
We will also need volunteers to wash the blankets after the station is closed. We will reimburse the funds to do this or provide a tax receipt for your donation; you will just take them to a nearby laundry mat and wash and dry them.
By clicking on the volunteer button above, you can sign up as a GLOWS volunteer.
The shelter, which is currently the gym at Axe Methodist Church in Garland, will be open during inclement weather. By signing up here, you will be notified by e-mail when the station is going to be open and be provided an opportunity to sign up for a time that best fits your schedule.
We ask that you keep your email current and let us know if you no longer wish to remain on our volunteer list.
Thank you for participating in this valuable program to help the homeless during a very dangerous time!
